Okanagan Lake Reports

Marek made it out on the lake for Father's Day, along with his twin daughters. Now that, is what Father's Day is all about! Although I wasn't fishing today I was playing with my grandkids at the park and had supper with my kids, just as good as fishing. Anyways, I digress, again, Marek and crew had a good day out. Although not mentioned I'm assuming you were on the south side of the bridge Marek? Lots of koks caught and, quite a few bows as well. Nothing huge in either category, koks were in that 9-10" range (just like the one that Jim won the big money on in the derby!) and the bows were in that 1-2lb range, perfect barby size! The best hook of the day was the pnk Apex and most fish were caught down in that 10-20' zone. Best fishing spot was where else but the middle of the lake! I have "observed", that with kokanee, they always seem to be more active over real deep water rather than closer in to shore, no idea why but, just an observation and something to look for when your on the kok hunt. Thanks Marek!

We had a real "mini" derby this time out, a total of 4 of us! I guess that's what happens when you try to schedule something on the Fathers Day weekend. Jim, Dave, Greg and myself hit the lake in the attempt to win the grand prize of one of those new townhouse thingy's (photo) that are just south of Ellison Prk, not to bad a prize I guess! To make this real simple, it was a sloooooooooooowwwww day! Everyone, except me (I got squawfish instead!), managed a number of small kokanee, Jim winning first prize in that category with this (photo) beauty.............ya. Anyways, it was in fact the biggest of the probably 30-40 caught! Standard kok gear, wedding band tipped with a worm kinda stuff. Yours truly took the rainbow trophy from Greg who caught a 16"er in the AM. In the dying hour of the derby I lucked out on this (photo) beaut, taken on a Cop Car Apex down at 56' in the Adventure Bay area.
Lots of fish marking today, all over the water column. That and koks jumping all over the place at times but, the rainbow fishing just plain sucked! Not sure what the problem was, maybe already had a big feed on or could have been that weather system that blew in and was stacking up again, who knows. In any event, I guess Jim and I will have to share one of those cheapo townhouse/condo/ things now. I was really hoping for another new truck but, maybe next time! Thanks for coming out guys, good BS session as usual, hopefully more fish next time!

You see, I make a big squawk about no one reporting in and then budda bing budda bang, lots of reports! Dave was out on the lake today, fishing his usual spots at and around Cameron Pt.. Using a UV Hot Spot flasher and Trout Killer Apex, Dave slaughtered the koks, getting his legal limit of 4 (photo) in no time but catching 15 total. Now that's what those kokanee counter people want to see coming in to the launch! Dave had about 150' of line out and with 4 ozs of weight, obviously the winning combo. Also, as Greg did, Dave wound up catching a bunch of decent size squaw fish in the same area as the kokanee, so I don't know if that's good or bad, obviously snacking on the koks as well.. Appreciate the report Dave!

Well, so far, Jordan was the only one brave enough to send in a report! You can't tell me, Jim, that with kokanee now open on the lake that you weren't out there! Jordan hit the south end of the lake, that's pretty much the report. Really slow fishing again on the lake, the kok reporting people are at the launches again taking stats on what's being caught so be patient with them. Jordan did say he had a pretty good day/hour out on Osoyoos Lk proir to this trip, bringing in 3 nice bows that were taken 40' down on the riggers but, an hour of good fishing and it was all over. I think the lake turnover and rising water has slowed the fishy's down on this lake as well, might take a few weeks to get it to turn on again. Thanks Jordan!
OK, so a couple of the other guys just sent me "stuff", guess I ragged on them to soon! Greg and Nan were out at their cabin (Whiteman Crk area) and did a bit of fishing Friday and Saturday. They did pick up a couple of small koks and Nan lost a nice bow right by the boat but that was about it. All the fish taken on Trout Killer Apex's on or near the surface. The fish story of the trip was when his Dad was bringing in a small 8" kok, had it right beside the boat and a big 24" squaw fish slurped it right off the hook! And anglers wonder where all the koks go, those "northern pike minnows" just don't eat the eggs and fry, they're getting the bigger fish as well!
Also got a report from Jim from Sunday, he was out on the lake at OK Centre with his wife, Julie. They also met up with Jason while waiting out the big wind that came up so took him out for a bit as well. Pretty good fishing, numerous koks and bows but nothing of any size. Best hook was a red Wedding Band tipped with just about anything that smelled! Jim said he had an "attractor" in front of the wedding band but not sure what that was, sometimes he just puts a hookless spoon in front of the lure, simple but it works. (Next Page)

Greg made it out around the Rattlesnake Isl area today. Fishing was pretty good, with 7 brought to the boat, all in that 14-16" range. Long story short they were hitting just about whatever was thrown at them, bucktails, Apex's etc. but, they were all caught on or near the surface, nothing down below. Hmmmm, sounds like the morning I had on Sunday as well. No nice pictures of Greg, even though it was his birthday today, a whole half century old!! Happy birthday you old bugger! Thanks buddy!
Jim was also out on the weekend, 24th and 25th, both days in the OK Center area. Lots of fish! His count for the 24th was 17 and Sunday was more, over 20! Mostly "dinks" (photo) as he calls them but he did accidently pick up a nice 2 lb kokanee. The only hook he mentioned was a pnk HS with 2 ozs of weight but all the fish were caught at or near the surface. The only other secret he would divulge was that he was tipping his small lures with stinky stuff! That was it for Jim, nothing wrong with steady action all day, regardless of size.
Also for everyone's info, there will be a kokanee opening on this lake again, see the link below for the official Ministry bulletin.

Well, I find it hard to believe that almost no one went fishing this weekend, at least not on our local lakes. Jim headed south across the line and caught some of these (photo) in some lake whose name I don't remember! Anyways, Jim said the lake is stocked with triploids and you can catch 30-40 a day if not more. Doesn't sound like a ton of fun to me, sounds like walleye fishing. Jim also mentioned that they don't fight worth a hoot! Stay home Jim! Jordan also sent in an "out of town" report. He and his dad hit Bella Coola for some salmon fishing on the weekend, now that's more like it! Although they did run into some nasty 3-5 meter seas they did have a day of good fishing around Bella Bella, picking up Chinooks like this (photo) and like this (photo) ! Now that's some fish!
Back to Okanagan Lk, Greg and Nan were out on the lake for the weekend, lounging at their cabin in the Whiteman Crk area. Slow weekend fishing but as usual, Nan kicked hubbys butt with fish like this (photo) taken on a silver Apex with 1oz over at Allison Prk. The same lure picked up a few koks trolling in the same area. In Greg's defense, he did manage a couple of Northern Pike Minnows, so all is not lost buddy! Looks like Nan's my new fishing partner and no, the kids don't come with the deal Greg! Thanks people!!
